Save energy

Saving electricity saves money. You should consider what kind of electricity contract is the best deal for you. You can track the price of electricity and plan your use of electricity accordingly.

In Finland, electricity use peaks on weekday mornings and after work. If you have an exchange electricity contract, electricity is usually cheaper at other times.

However, electricity consumption also affects fixed electricity contracts. If consumption is high in Finland at times when electricity is expensive, fixed electricity contracts will also cost more in the future, so it is a good idea to save electricity regardless of the kind of contract you have.

What kind of electricity contract should I get?

The Energy Authority’s website lets you calculate what kind of electricity contract is the best deal for you.

Track electricity prices

You can track the price of electricity by downloading the Tuntihinta price app on your phone. The app tells you when electricity is expensive and when it is cheap. The app is only available in Finnish.

Track your electricity consumption

Electricity companies have apps that you can use to track how much electricity you use. The apps help you understand what part of your everyday life uses the most electricity. You can find information on the apps on your electricity company’s website.

Energy saving tips

  • In Finland, the peak hours, when electricity consumption is at its highest, are from 8.00 to 10.00 and from 16.00 to 18.00 on weekdays. During these times, it is not advisable to use appliances that consume a lot of electricity. Such appliances include the oven, dishwasher, washing machine, electric sauna and underfloor heating. It is better to use these appliances at other times.
  • Use less hot water. Take shorter showers.
  • Lower the room temperature. You can save five per cent of the energy spent on heating by lowering the room temperature by one degree. The recommended temperature is 18–20 ºC for bedrooms and 20–21 ºC in other rooms.
  • If you have an electric car, charge it during off-peak hours, when electricity is cheaper.
  • If an electrical appliance has a timer function, you can schedule its use to off-peak hours.

Recycling saves energy

When you sort waste correctly, its material can be reused to make new products. You can also buy and sell used items to conserve natural resources and energy.
